How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?


For our ancillary tasks we had to create a film poster, film opening credits and film review in film marketing all three of these products work together to promote the film. The film poster promotes the film, there may be several versions with different content these can be different in different countries, we created three different film posters which follows this. I believe all three of our poster promote the main message or our film and have a wide audience range.They do this through the tagline "Not all monsters live under your bed" which is a iroic pun as her dad is the one beating her, also the colour black represents and protrays a dark theme. The wrtting has been placed in orange matching the colour of the autumn leaves used in the poster which makes the writting stand out. The first thing that combines the title credits with the opening titles is the use of the handwritting and turnt lined pages as our first draft for our poster was orginally in lined paper however still link in with the handwritting font used on the poster. The opening titles are what the audience sees first when watching the film these are important because they give an insight to the type of film the audience is going to watch and also correspond with the film poster to work equally in advertising the film. The way in which the title credits play an important part with in the film advertisement is because they are the first glimpse of the film which means they must make sense and entertain the audience, normally if a film has rubbish title credits its reflective of the film. Title credits are also such a big part or a film as they can make or break an actor or director, this is because title credits highlight the actors and directors with in the film making them memorable and recognisable.The title credits link in directly with our film review as the first title on the film review is the film name like in the title credits. These also fit in nicely as they mention the directors name also and along with the titles promote and advertise the crew involved in making the film.The film review that would appear in a leading film magazine such as empire or total film, although the review is often wrote after the film it plays a fair job in advertising the film. Reviews often see the film depending on whether its a major block buster before the public has seen the film, they do this by going to film premiers. Reviewers by giving their verdicts on the film have a huge power to over the audience as they can persuade a person to watch or not watch a film. The main aim of a film review is to carry on advertising the film after its been released, good films will have several film reviews for example slum dog millionaire. For our magazine review we made it in the style of a total film magazine review, the fact that the review appears in this magazine advertises it immediately as it is one of the leading film magazines in the world, people by reading this magazine will realise that this review is of a trustworthy nature and can be falsed lead into any ting a reviewer says. We decided to use total film compared to filmstar as its more recognisable and there is more publicity surrounding the film.The film review directly links in with the poster as we use quotes from the film with in our text for example "Not all monsters live under your bed", another way in which the two work well together is the poster acts as a visual presentation of the film and the film review describes the visual presentation.

I be live that all our three ancillary tasks work well together as they both show similarities between them, for example our magazine review shows a happy image and corresponds with our film posters where we use happy images of the girls in our film to promote the film. Furthermore through out our magazine review we use quotes from the film, which support the review as it is being backed up by the film. They all work equally in the marketing indutry as the poster promotes the film and entices the viewers to want to watch the film, the title credits prepare the audience for whats to come with in the film and the magazine review anaylses and interprets the film persauding people to watch it.

In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?


Our film follows the genre of a drama, the main aim of a drama is to create a believable and realistic story that shocks and conveys a serious message to the audience. Our story is based around the main message of domestic violence we mainly wanted to show that domestic violence can happen to anybody you know whether they are male or female, old or young. I believe by our film carrying this message we have followed the codes and conventions of a drama. By using a character that is represented as young, innocent and lovable we have challenged the stereotypical character used in a drama which is normally a character in their mid thirties who generally focus on a life breakdown or crisis. We have also developed the theme of domestic violence within our film, to do this we have steered away from the typical patriarchal oppression related to women and now focus on the oppression and deception of a young girl who evokes sympathy and vulnerability. We chose to develop the character because we looked at the representation of children, considering we live in a child centred society and children are precious to us we thought the film would evoke more feeling furthermore sympathy conveying the message of our film better. (The Little Princess) like our story focuses on a young girl who needs the love from her father, however is constantly isolated as he goes to war leaving her behind in a cruel all girls school in our story the character like in the (Little Princess) has a constant longing for love from her father and this evokes sympathy. From (The Little Princess) we have adapted the young and fragile character however (Provoked)is a film all about domestic violence between a young couple like provoked we have chose to use a more serious story line than (The Little Princess) by using the theme of domestic violence rather than basic isolation.We use a young female character to evoke sympathy and make the story more believable as women are represented as pure, fragile and need to be protected. In addition to back this up the story will be more believable as male characters are represented as strong and dominant. In conclusion one in four women suffer from domestic violence opposed to the one in ten male portion. In addition domestic violence towards males in society seems to be covered up and the story could seem a bad imitation on domestic violence rather than convey a the message sucessfully. In a drama it’s important to capture the mood and stableness of the character and this can often done through the use of lighting. In dramas the lighting is often made over contrast using too much light to show that the world around the character is at its natural state, this use of lighting highlights the fact that although the character is suffering the world around them still goes on. For example this is done often in dramas such as (Ashes to Ashes). On the other hand in Dramas like (Life on Mars) the lighting is made very dull this shows the realism of the characters life and the fact that nothing seems to surprise or thrill the character in The monster we have stuck to the codes and conventions of a drama by using dim light. On filming we were fortunate to get a permit to film in the park I believe the weather really worked to our advantage because the dull and isolated weather echoed the mind of our main character. Another way in which we created an isolated and unwanted character just like in (E.T) is through the use of misenscene which we kept to a bare minim, just like in dramas we only used the props necessary and did not over crowd the set. We have followed the codes and conventions of a drama as we have used flashbacks however we have developed them because by the end they tell the whole story. Furthermore we have challenged the general concept as they are used in more in a psychological way as you have to match the flashbacks along with the voice over in order for the story to make sense as the voice over and flashbacks have hidden meanings. In our story just like the film (Black) which is common in drama however it develops the voice over by combining it with music and challenges it because we use a child’s voice.
4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Media technologies with in the construction, research and planning of our film were deadly important. One major source of technology through out of our project was the Internet; the advantage of having the Internet is we would access information from all over the world. We used the Internet mainly for research for example, during the making of our film posters the Internet was useful to search different images which we created in to a scrapbook. We used sites such as Google, Yahoo and Ask Jeeves. One website we used immensely was Dafont, Dafont allowed us to experiment and view different fonts which we could test put in lowercase and uppercase, we were also allowed to download fonts which we could use with in our film, for example a main theme with in our film is writting we were able to download handwritting fonts which we could use in our film poster representing Lilly's handwriting as she writes her story. The fact we had the internet to search for fonts allowed us to develop the look of our poster more and we were not just limited to the basic fonts on the computer in programs like word and paint, so this was an advantage. Other than the Internet we had the help of Photoshop when creating our film reviews and film posters as opposed to other software's such as Paint. Photoshop is more advanced than Paint so we were allowed to overlap and create different layers and images on our poster. In addition Photoshop allows us to chose the size of canvas which we would be working on, this meant we could program the paper size to A4, this meant when printing any documents they would not have to been cropped to the right size. Premier like Photoshop is owned by Abobe this meant that there were similar features to one another making the software's easier to use. It is fair to say that with out Premier we would not have a film as this was our editing software. Premier was a good software as it was more advance to Windows Movie Maker this meant we had more effects with in our film. For example we were able to digitize our rushes on to the computer and watch them on a bigger screen, we could also drag them into the Bin and were able to label them this meant they were easier to find when editing. We could also set up a filing system with in the Premier program which allowed us to place all scene rushes into different files. Another advantage of Premier over Windows Movie Maker was that we had more effects we would use with in our film, for example we had more colour effects, transition effects and audio tweaks we could use to make our film more realistic and smoother. Other advantage of having a Blog rather than paper Logs is that we had easy communication with group members, for example we could post questions on group members blogs and we could leave feedback on other peoples work. Blogs helped majorly when it came to feedback as we were able to put people work up on the interactive boards, unlike regular whiteboards or chalkboards, we were able to work interactively with our blogs and could recieve feedback from our whole class on specific tasks posted on our blogs, we could also compare tasks such as the ancilliarly ones with other people work from other groups and in a way this could guide us. As blogger is an online program we were also near MSN Messenger, this is an online chat system which we were all very much familliar with this came in handy as we already knew how to use the program and rather than arranging meeting or making phone calls could arrange an online talk session on messenger, this meant we were able to keep in contact more regularly. The schools web mail was also useful as we were able to contact cast members and recieve teachers permission for their absences on the days of filming faster and effeciently as all teachers and students are programed into the system.

Other than the internet based programs we had the sound and camera equipment this was important as with out this there would be no film. The still cameras were useful and we were able to access them easily. With these we were able to take our still shots for location reeces and add them to our blogs. This advance in technology helped as we could upload the images rather than having to print the film from the camera and scan them like older cameras, this was just more time effeicent. The filming camera were also a big element of our filming as they allowed the dircetor and camera man to see the image of the film and the shot type on the view finder as it was being recorded from this the director could chose to set up another camera shot or angle making the cinematrography better. The cameras connected to the Windshield System by which we could record quality sound on. We had headphone that connected into the camera bu which we could pick up any unwanted sound saving us from making to record the scene again when editing. The Windshield system was attached to a boom pole by which we would get closer into the shot to pick up sound with out the camera seeing the Windshield system. Also when filming in Maysebrooke Park we were able to use the Hairy Harry in windy weather allowing us not to pick us this sound as much making natural sound and dialogue clearer.

I am a student at Barking Abbey School in Barking. I am currently doing my A2 Coursework for Media Studies. For the coursework we are instructed to create a 5 minute film. However some of our shots are needed to be filmed off the school grounds in a nearby park- Mayesbrook Park. I was wondering if we would need a filming permit from the city council for such a small project. We would only need to use the location for about 6 hours.

The general rule is that you can film in any public space as long as it does not cause obstruction or nuisance etc. Filming in the public domain does not require a formal permission.


Of course you must have the permission of any of those taking part to be filmed.


As I am guessing that your crew is small and will not involve large equipment or vehicles I can’t see any issues with your enquiry.

The song is about a women who is abused by her patner and at first tried seeking help from the police however they never come. She then goes on to say how she cannot confide in the police as they come to late or never come at all. Although Tracy Chapman did not recieve help from her abusive patner her story is now heard through her the song "behind the walls" and has helped and inspired many through out abusive times. I believe this song links in with out story "The Monster" as just like Tracy Chapman the only way Lilly finds to tell her tale of her abusive father is through her story she writes in class.

Here is our first draft of our posters, after showing this to our class we recieved some feedback, we were told that:

-The poster needed more colour however still needed to convey a dark message.
-We were also told that we needed to add the tagline of the film on the poster.
-We were also told to add more colour into the title to make it stand out more.
-We needed to add the happy aspects of her life too.




After recieving this feedback we added some leave into the poster not only did this symbolise her happy side of life at the park this also added colour to the poster. In addition we included our tagline "Not all monsters live under your bed in white and finally we added some colour into the title we chose orange to match the colour of the leaves used.

After creating our first







Here is the first poster that was made for our film, we received some feedback from the class saying that the film looked like a boxing film or a book cover. We were also told that there needs to be more on the main character of the film.

In this poster was endeavoured to add the friendlier side of the story and we added in Lilly and her friends on the merry go around. Although we still seemed that this did not fully promote our film so we decided to reevaluate the themes with in our film. .

Here is a powerpoint we created after carrying out location recce on our possible locations, we were looking for postives and negatives of the location we were planning to use and any safety issues we may encounter.

Here is a editing log we created, the main aim of this was to record who edited and when, we also recorded what we had achieved and any problems we had encountered. This noticed the next person of what had been done and where they could pick up from, in addition from recording the problems the next editor would be notified of this, as they encounter the same problem or may be able resolve this.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Media technologies with in the construction, research and planning of our film were deadly important. One major source of technology through out of our project was the Internet; this was mainly because we used the Internet helped us immensely. We used the Internet during our research scrapbook, for fonts and images related to our story for example we used google, ask jeeves and yahoo to research images of trees, doors and punches. We also used font websites such as Dafont.com to research handwriting fonts for our poster which could possibly match our title credits.

We also used the Internet in our magazine review so we could research the language layout, writ ting style used with in a certain style of film magazine review. We could also find a basic list of what a magazine review consists of and you could check out the website for the specific information on the magazine.

Our blogs were a major help when it came to feedback as we were able to view the peoples work on the interactive projector and the whole class could get feedback on different task and we could compare our ancillary tasks to others.

Other than the above, premier our editing software was also hugely important as with out this we would not be able to edit our film. Premier was important as it helped us make our film flow through transitions and we were able to add different effects on our film.

The still cameras were also important as we were able to take snap shots for our location recces which allowed us to check out our the postives and negatives of locations used.

The wildshield system was also deadly important as we were able to record sound for our film and the camera we used were important with out the camera and windshield system there will be no film.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

The main thing I have learnt is that the audience is always right. From the very start of this media project that audience has helped the film progress so much. it’s important to get audience feedback as they are the ones watching the film and that constructive criticism changes the way they in which the audience views the film. From the planning stages of our I am glad we started receiving feedback from the audience. It all started with the pitch, our initial pitch was of a story of a serial killer who was now on his death bed and wanted to confess his sins, through our pitch feedback we were convinced that the story had many faults which we did not see, thankfully we were able to see this and the audience feedback lead to a huge meeting on whether our initial idea was causable, eventually we changed our idea to what is now Monster. After our first draft of our storyboard we showed it to our class for some audience feedback and we learnt that our film was to continuous with in the same shots we was then introduced to cut away shots we realised that by using simple cut away shots that the audience was more secure as they were able to see what all the characters were doing with in the scene, one prime example of this with in our film is the cut away shots of the girls walking to classroom and the shots of the class room. In addition from feedback we were told we needed to use more cinematography with in film, we learnt that cinematography makes the films more interesting for the audience. From this we added more shots using cinematography such as when Lilly and her friends are laying in the grass and a shot is taken from above. We realised that by doing a few more shots like this the story was more moving and this really heightened the friendship with Zoe and Emily but also highlighted her isolation with in the plot. The next thing we received feedback on was our editing, firstly we had to create an assembly edit in of our whole five minute long film. After creating an assembly edit we had to show students in our class and our teacher on whether they thought the film worked well together. As the assembly edit was a rough edit of what shots we would be using this was vital as we were able to see whether the audience liked the type of shots we were using and whether many seemed to long, from this we realised whether the shots used evoked the emotions we wanted them to convey. From this feedback we changed several lengths of shots simply because they were too long or short and they did not convey to the meaning that was originally intended. Furthermore we took out shots that seemed irrelevant such as a handheld camera shot that starts in front of the character and was panned into an over the shoulder shot because from our audience feedback we were told the shot did not have the same pace as the other shots used with in our sequence and were told the shot looked uneasy and irrelevant. After our assembly edit we continued with editing our scenes and after each one completed we decided to gather feedback, this would be easier than gathering feedback at the end of the finished film because they would be easier to correct here, from doing so we were able to correct or change any shots that did not fit in with our film. For our ancillary tasks feedback was essential especially when creating our film poster as the audience would be the ones seeing the poster which will entice them to watch the film, if this is not doing so the audience can tell us and we can make changes to the poster. Our first poster was a fist punching through paper from feedback we realised that the poster looked more like a book cover or from a fighting film, from this we realised that we need to re-evaluate the themes in our film and colour that connate the message with in our film, so feedback helped us improve the massively. Another task that was vital to receive feedback on was our title sequences when doing this we decided to receive two types of feedback, one type was before on any ideas for our title sequence and the other was after in which received feedback on how the title credits worked well with the film from this we could change them before the final deadline of the film. After the title credits we received feedback about our magazine review, this was important as we realised whether the magazine review fits in with total film magazine and found out what needed to be changed to make it fit in with the total film style.

Before creating my film review page from a real running film magazine I decided to do some research about the layout.

Introduction ~~
Total Film and Empire are probably the two most popular and widely available film magazines in England. Empire has been going the longest, (for as long as I can remember) and Total Film has been now going several years.
Both magazines include cinema reviews, videos to rent and buy, DVD’s, information on up-and-coming films and interviews with actors, directors, etc. I usually buy Total Film but have bought Empire a few times and still tend to buy it if there’s nothing good on Total Film.

Well considering you buy these mags to find out what to see at the flicks or to decide what film to rent or buy this bit is very important. I cannot really say which magazine has better reviews as all of the reviews are wrote by different people. Most of the reviews in the two magazines are high quality and useful but some are just full of irrelevant drivel. And some of the top members on Ciao’s film reviews are easily better than reviews in these two magazines.
What I think makes Total Film win on reviews is that they still include lots of detail on less well-known and unusual films. Empire tends to only devote one or two paragraphs to these less well-known films and purely concentrates on Hollywood blockbusters.
Value for money ~~
Both magazines contain roughly 150 pages and unfortunately both have lots of adverts. Total Film costs £2.90 and Empire costs £3. So not much difference in price but I would certainly say Total Film is better value for money as it frequently includes a freebie.
Though if its just reviews your after both mags are bad value for money when you can get high quality and accurate reviews on a huge variety of films on Ciao.

Other bits about the magazine ~~
I personally prefer the layout and style of Empire though I suppose it’s a matter of personal opinion really. Empire is plainer and simpler and it is easier to be able to just pick up Empire anywhere inside and start reading. With Total Film you have to rely more on the contents.
One thing I like about Total Film is their coverage on unknown filmmakers and unknown films. And they include lots of information and advice for budding wanabee film directors. Even if your not considering making a film this section still makes good reading.
Both mags interview big, well-known famous faces – British and American stars. Total Film also reviews film websites, film hardware, videogames and film related books. Empire also reviews all of these except videogames. Quite useful really getting reviews on all of those as well as films.
Subscribing ~~
Like all magazines Total Film and Empire are desperate to get subscribers. Both do this by offering very competitive subscription rates. At the moment though if your looking at subscribing to one of the two, Empire will give you the best deal. Subscribing to Empire will give you a £1 off ticket at ABC and Odeon cinemas and U571 on DVD or video for free. Just a shame really that U571 was totally inaccurate and based entirely on lies. Though that’s totally irrelevant…

Overall ~~
Both magazines are good but if you are thinking of buying one of the two I would recommend you buy Total Film. Though as I said earlier if its just reviews you want your frankly wasting your time with Ciao and loads of other reviews all over the net.
However if your bored and need something to read I strongly recommend both, there’s quite a lot in them and there’s lots in to interest anyone remotely interested in films.
Here is my final film review after studying the style of 'total film' reviews to make the page look official I have added other film reviews which I have typed on films out in the cinemas currently.

Voice Over Script Longer


There are not many things that I am scared of there are actually many things I enjoy, like swinging on the swings, and going round on the Mary go round, I love my friends Emily and Zoey and I know they love me too, we have so much fun.

We love going to the park, and lying in the grass, we could laugh all day long. I love going to the park its better than going home.

I’m scared of spiders I’m not even scared of ghost, even when my friends leave me I’m still not scared. The only thing that frightens me is a monster.

The monster I know isn’t like any other monster. He doesn’t live in my closet or under my bed.

He doesn’t only come out at night. I don’t really understand because I love him; He says he loves me. We still have fun too.
But playing hide and seek isn’t the same as before.

Because these days, if I lose the game, I lose sleep that night too.

I don’t know what to do, I’m so lonely sometimes

I know everything will be okay and the fear will go away,
Besides, the monster only comes out when the bottle is out.
But I’d still like to know why does he treat me so?

I’ll never be mad but I know there should be love & comfort at home.”

Monster Script Draft #3


We see a shot of three girls hurrying to class (this is noted by the empty halls in the school and the fact that they are carrying books rushing) Right before Lilly goes into her classroom:

Lilly: Bye guys I’ll meet you after school. Same place as always!

Lilly walks into the classroom. Everyone looks at her and the teacher immediately tells her to sit down.

Ms. Harper: (Teacher gets up from her desk where she was busy doing something on the computer) Good morning class! I thought today we would do a fun writing activity.

Class: Awe (whiny, not waning to do it)- Lilly is seen and she does not participate in the whining.

Ms Harper: Now, now kids I mentioned it would be fun, so there is no need to panic. I want you to write about what you are most afraid of. It can be fictional or non-fictional. (A cut to a kid raising his arm, very eagerly) Wait Mathew let me finish then I’ll help you.

I am leaving that for you to decide. Say for example, if I were to write about my worst fear I would write about giant spiders attacking my house! (laughs) Anyway, get started now and you have until the end of the lesson, if you don’t finish it’s homework! (Sounds of the class whining again)

(The focus will start to go towards Lily. Due to an over the shoulder shot, we can start to see what she is writing. Her first written words are “I don’t have many things I’m scared of. There are actually many things I enjoy. (In the midst of that sentence the narration starts and there is a slow fade to three girls playing the park on swings, they are laughing and playing but the voice over covers up the sound from the park) There is a fade back to the classroom of Lilly writing.

Lilly(V.O. narration):” I’m not scared of spiders. I’m not even scared of ghosts. The only thing that frightens me in this world is a monster. (There is fade to Lilly walking along a fence and dragging the stick along the metal bars.)
The monster I know isn’t like any other monster. He doesn’t live in my closet or under my bed. He doesn’t only come out at night. I don’t really understand because I love him; He says he loves me. We still have fun too. (Fade to Lilly sitting on the ground in the park with her knees to her chest and her eyes covered with her hands. (We are now back in the classroom scene.)

As she finishes writing the essay. She puts down her pen and looks up. She is looking straight at the camera when she shuts her eyes. We then have sudden scenes of the film running backwards in about 5-10 seconds as there is a anticipating sound playing. We then have a mirage type scene where We are zooming into Lilly yet tracking backwards at the same time to create a "different world" feel. We cut to a black sillhouette shadow of a man raising his hand and then we hear Lilly saying "Daddy, No"(-The last scene will be very discrete and dark, the man will not be fully shown therefore we will not see his face, yet everything comes together at this point as it is clear who the monster really is.)

This is the slum dog millionaire trailer and below i am going to analyse three different film posters for this movie :

The main colours used on this Slum Dog Millionaire poster are red, yellow and orange, although all these colours give off a warm vibe they all are used for different reasons. Red is stereotypically known as the colour of love and passion however, can also connote strong ambition and a will for fighting linking in with the theme of fighting for love in the film. The colour red additionally links directly to tag line of the film “what does it take to find a lost love” as red has an attached sigma to love. Other than the colour red the colours orange and yellow are used. The colour orange half way between red and yellow and can be said to be a corruption of the two colours being inseparably tied to the image of fire. The colour can be symbolic of energy, enthusiasm, 'get-it-done' attitude which links in with the characteristics and personality of Dev Patel as Jamal k.Malik in slumdog and could have been used to show the characters role in the plot of slumdog. Furthermore the colour introduces a very Indian based theme to the film as the colour orange is stereotypical of Indian culture. By using the colour orange the poster also introduces a theme of religion (Hinduism) which directly links in with Jamals character, religion is spefically referenced in the scene in slum dog in which the two boys are running away from the police in the slums and the Hindu god Rama appears showing the audience the path in which people chose in life. Other than the warm colours of red, orange and yellow, cold colours such as blue and purple have been used, blue and purple colours are used to contrast with the warm colours this is used for a number of reasons I believe the contrasts are used to show the two characters banished love this is mirrored by the female characters running actions as if she is running away from authority to be with Jamal. The colours also symbolise royalty suggesting a theme of money and riches with in the film. Also the colour addresses the famous quiz show “Who wants to be a millionaire?” again referring to money and the values of it. The female character is placed in the center of poster along with the male character, the lighting has been adjusted to make the female character look angelic like and pure. This suggests that she is the main female character in the plot and highlights her as the damsel in distress. This is contrasted with the orange colour of the male character which suggest his quest for her through out the film and possibly is pressure and tension during questioning game show. The main figures in this poster are the “Who wants to be a millionaire?” question board, the female character and male character.

I believe this poster can be aimed at a wide audience range; it is focused at a British Asian audience because it cleverly combines modern British society with Asian culture. It introduces many themes of stereotypical Asian religions such as Hinduism and Islam and introduces British culture with a British based TV show “Who wants to be a millionaire”.

All movie posters are set out for the same purpose this is to get the audience to watch the film from this poster I am persuaded to watch the film as they include the directors’ name in eye catching yellow writing. From seeing his name in this poster I will immediately recognise his other works of Danny Boyle and will want to see the film as I enjoy his style of work. Also I am drawn in to the film as on the poster I am asked a rhetorical question in which I cannot reuse to answer. In addition the audience wants to watch the film as they would have seen trailers and would like to know how a film based around a television program can turn into a convincing love story. The genres referred to are drama and romance, the codes and conventions that have been used through out the film are young lovers having an obstacle to loving each other.

In Slumdog Anil Kapoor is used a unique selling point for a bollywood audience as he is a well known actor in many bollywood films and a huge star success for India featuring in films such as welcome, race, no entry and yuvvraaj. Other than Anil Kapoor, Fredia Pinto is also used as a selling point for Slumdog as she is a professional model in India moreover dev patel is also recognised for his role as Anwar Kharral in 19 episodes of the british tv series Skins.

The tag line on this poster is this works well in a rhetorical format as it makes the audience question the themes with in the film by labelling with in the multiple choice answer questions. The tag line directly makes interaction with the audience by questioning them.

I do believe this is an effective poster because its eye catching through the chaotic colours in the back ground, the two main characters are placed well with in the frame this adds a theme of the characters always seeming to miss each other which fits in nicely with the narrative of slum dog millionaire. The title of eye catching which making you remember the title of the film. Furthermore the poster attracts an action based audience because of the chaos deliberately made on the poster and the tag line is smart which entices the audience to answer.






The information on the poster is important because it allows us to identify the genre of the film, in addition the writing placed at the bottom of the poster is extremely important as allows us to see all the companies that are involved in the film, from this we are able to remember any other films the companies such as Fox Search Light pictures and Warner Bros have been involved with such as Space Jam and Looney Tunes Movie and we can remember whether we enjoyed these according to whether we have or not this may influence us to see the film. The poster includes the peoples choice award logo this shows the audience that Slum Dog millionaire has been voted by other people as a good movie making he film seem more reliable, this persuades the audience to watch the film.

The film poster for any film is a very important element as this along with trailers and other advertisements aspects it entices the audience to watch the film. The film poster is crucial because it gives the audience a chance to see elements of the film with out telling the whole story. Film posters are used on buses, billboards, in telephone boxes and in the cinema and they stir a major source of publicity and advertisement, film posters are really one of the main important conventions of film advertisement.

Finding Cast!

When creating a short film good cast are essential otherwise the emotion and message of the film may not be portrayed to the audience properly.

What makes good cast:

- People who are reliable.
- People who are willing.
- People who believe in the project.
- People who fit the criteria with in the character profile.

As we are reconstructing a classroom scene we needed several extras, persuading people to extras is not easy, we were looking for roughly eight extras of which we could separate out in our classroom to make it look like a full one. We also needed our main character Lilly, her two friends and a classroom teacher.

Where should we start looking?

As we wanted cast who were good at acting as well as looking like they were 11 – 13 years old we issued letters out to the drama teachers and attached character profiles to them see whether they would recommend any students for the parts and also done this so drama students could volunteer. Here is the letter we sent out:

Dear Drama Teachers, and students,

Notice to all year nine / ten students who are interested in participating in a some a – level media filming. We are looking for around 12 students who could act as year seven pupils in a class room scene; these can be girls and boys to make up a fair majority in the classroom. We are looking for three other main characters unfortunately they all need to be girls. The character profiles are attached behind. Please can you email any students full names forward to amyjoancharles-x@live.co.uk who are interested in these roles as we will need to audition these students and arrange rehearsal schedules through email.

We also decided to ask any students in year nine and ten media classes as they would understand the importance of our project as also they are media students. We placed posters asked year thirteen students as we needed to show the difference in age between students and teacher, to come and audition for the teacher role; we were looking for someone who was a female according to our character profile however also auditioned males in case we couldn’t find a suitable female lead they also needed to be reliable. Finally we collected a list of names which wanted to be in our A2 Media Film, all we had to do now was narrow them down to main characters and extras.



Cast Auditions

Through Graces audition we noticed huge potentional, she was very open, talkative and confident which was very positive for someone we wanted as committed for our main character.

However did she suit our characters criteria?

Considering our main character is very timid and vulnerable we agreed that grace was unsuitable for the role, she did not match our character looks described in our character profile as we wanted a brunette girl with pale skin and her attitude seemed to be more suited to a more popular, attention seeking role. We questioned whether she would be obedient and hard to handle being on set for a number of hours, would grace get easily distracted? We agreed that from the characteristics shown she would nicely play the character of Emily who in the characters profile is stressed as talkative and attention seeking. With grace's character sorted knowing that she would not play Lilly we still had two more girls to audition.

We next auditioned Taylor Cook, her appearance was cute and sweet her stature looked very vulnerable and fragile. She nicely fit in with our character description. When reading the script provided she seemed timid however we liked this. She seemed shy however comfortable at the same time this edged us on even more towards her. Although we had fallen in love with Taylor for our main character it would not be fair to rule out Annabeth's audition.

Through out Annabeth’s audition she seemed very shy and not in the way we wanted, she was not believable and looked uncomfortable in with the audition setting. Off camera she seemed confident about receiving the main part and this made her seem cocky rather than professional. Her looks suited the character of Lilly most out of all the characters however her personality did not. We decided that again by searching for the main character we had found our actress for the character of Zoe.

Again please!

Finally before casting the characters we wanted to make sure we had got the correct girls matched with the correct characters so we asked the girls to deliver the script again this time in a slower tone whilst this time recording some notes.

Deliberation!

It was now time to deliberate and we left the classroom to discuss how the girl did in there audition. To make the process fair with in the groups we noticed that majority would rule in the event of an uneven result. Two of us insisted that Taylor was the obvious choice for the character and one ruled against liking Annabeth’s persona however as majority rules Taylor was picked and we headed back to the classroom to tell the girls.

Here is our second world of film moodboard, this was important to make as it allowed us to give visual image of the themes with in our film.


This is my moodboard about the colour red of which we will create our film about.
It is important to remember that with different reds become different connations.

Red can symbolise intensity, passion and invocation. Red also has different meanings in different countries in India the colour red represents purity and intergrity this is why Inidan brides wear red although in china red symbolises celebration and goodluck and in South Africa red is seen as the colour of mourning.. The color is audacious, so it usually dilutes the colors around it. For this reason it’s used to accent and highlight objects of importance.The colour is used in advertising this is because the colour is eye catching and appetizing promoting the product to the audiences full attention.

The red rose had become a metaphor of passion and love.It is one of the most eternal symbols for love and admiration, it's no surprise that red roses are among the most admired and evocative of all the flowers. The charisma of the red rose has been a source of immense inspiration for many throughout the ages. However, it is as the symbol for love that the red rose is most commonly recognized.


Blood


When we think of the colour red one of the connations we recieve is the scarlet red of blood. Death and the gloriness of it is now a recongised as one of the main connations of the colour red.



This is a song called Whitehouses by Vanessa Carton which directly refers to blood. The song is all aboutdanger another connation of red however directly refers to the danger of youth, the story starts with a young couple who are in love and their time spent together. The lyrics talk about achohol and the corruption it has on the mind which also links to the colour red. Some time passes and the couple are in a car and are "going way to fast" the pace of the car ride is also reflective of the fast pace of their relationship.
